scream another night down (King Kong)
I should be writing, so of course I'm going to update my LJ.

I uploaded my [info]yuletide story, so that's officially done. Now I can concentrate (ha!) on the two I have left, which doesn't seem to be happening. What's up with that, brain?

Anyway, [info]fleurdeleo and I went to see King Kong this afternoon. I liked it. I cried a little at the end, because it's sad. Not sobbing or anything, but in that kind of 'can't stop a few tears from slipping out' way. Mostly, I thought it was way too long. Most of the stuff in the middle felt gratuitous to me. It's possible I'm biased because I loathe giant bugs, and I did in fact run to the ladies' room the time the men were attacked.

I also felt horrible for the brontosaurs, who were just trying to get the hell away from predators and ended up in a fifteen brontosaur pile up.

I liked Ann and I thought Driscoll was cute, but once Hayes was dead I really didn't care about anybody but Kong, and I knew he wasn't making out of the movie alive.

I think that's the problem - the middle felt so gratuitous because we know they capture Kong (and fit him in that hold? Poor Kong) and he ends up on top of the Empire State Building, so who really cares about a bunch of undifferentiated crewmen plus Jimmy (I enjoyed the Heart of Darkness blather, as cheesy as it was. "It wasn't an adventure story." "No."), Andy Serkis and Hayes, who I loved, and oh, Kyle Chandler, who is as adorable as he was on Early Edition and absolutely charming as the not-quite-cowardly Bruce Baxter. He certainly has mobile eyebrows. And I kept thinking the captain ought to have been played by Sean Bean. [info]fleurdeleo agreed with me, as I knew she would. *g*

Kong himself was AWESOME. I mean, just amazing. And Naomi Watts did a lovely job in a pretty thankless role. Adrien Brody was adorkable. Jack Black needs to do more "serious" roles, because I thought he was excellent, but on the other hand, I never did quite forget I was watching Jack Black. Colin Hanks was adorable.

So it was enjoyable, but I think it would have been more enjoyable at maybe 3/4 of the length. or maybe even half the length. ANd with 100% fewer giant bugs. I did enjoy the nods to other movies, and to the original - "Fay?" "Doing some picture with RKO." "Cooper. Of course." Heh.

Back to writing. I will get something done. I will. I will.

Won't I?

I agree with you completely about Kong. There should have been some serious editing done throughout the whole shebang, and I really would have liked more dialog since the most significant parts (Heart of Darkness, "Beauty killed the beast") I could pretty much anticipate.

But if all you wanted was to see Kong's features, you got plenty of that. I wanted a bit more romantic extrapolation between Watts and Brody's characters, but what the heck. :)

It would have been nice - even just seeing them arrive back in NYC and go their separate ways, before we got him watching the play and realizing...

But yes, there could have been some judicious editing of the whole middle part of the film, because I got the point pretty quickly that Kong was going to defend Ann from other predators - I didn't need five battles with T. Rexes to prove it.

Hi, I'm a refugee from ATBVS. I think we've conversed there a few times, and I've certainly read what you've posted. I've been hanging around a few other ex-posters for ... actually quite a long time now, come to think of it. Anyway, just letting you know I'm going to add you, unless you object. Feel free to return the compliment or not, as you see fit.

"Fay?" "Doing some picture with RKO." "Cooper. Of course." Heh.

This was my favorite part of the movie and I cackled during it, prompting everyone else in the theater to stare at me. I also laughed my ass off at all the movie parts, which no one else seemed really amused by, but, pshaw, it cracked me up.

I can't really sum up all my thoughts about it, I agree with almost everything you said and ... sometimes I love it and sometimes I hate it. I don't regret seeing it, however. And I stand by the idea that Adrien Brody is pure hottness.

I am closing in on finishing [info]yuletide ... I'm so nervous I can barely take it! That's normal, right?? ;)

Yeah, I giggled at that line. Our audience was actually remarkable quiet, given it was sold out and pretty dang packed. Much quieter than the audience I saw Brokeback Mountain with, oddly enough.

Yeah, I'm glad I saw it, and I get why other people are loving it, and I loved bits of it, but I think it's just not my kind of movie. Or rather, all that stuff in the middle makes it a movie I would skip large chunks of were I watching it at home.

And I stand by the idea that Adrien Brody is pure hottness.

He is oddly attractive. *g*

Yes. The only way I deal with it is by not thinking about it any more. It's uploaded and I can't do anything more about it now. *snerk* I have two other sesas to finish.

The bugs were icky and the dinosaur stampede was 'huh?' and the predators were not acting like predators. Ugh. But other than that I liked it too.

Yeah, the whole section on the island was too long and a lot of "huh? wha?" for me. But the Kong stuff was awesome.
